Sistema Nacional de Salud (Spain) — Emergency care
Spain · National public health system · Free
Public emergency care is free for any patient on Spanish soil; non-emergency care for tourists generally requires insurance or self-pay.
Real Decreto-ley 7/2018 restored universal coverage; emergency care in public hospitals is free for anyone in Spain. Non-emergency outpatient care for non-residents typically requires the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), private insurance, or self-pay.
Go to any hospital público urgencias. For chronic conditions, check eligibility with the regional health service before relying on free care.
Free coverage is largely limited to emergency/urgent care for non-residents. Carry insurance for elective treatment.
