Universal public health system. Emergency care available to anyone in Brazil regardless of nationality.
Article 196 of the Brazilian Constitution defines healthcare as a right of all and duty of the state. Emergency and urgent care in SUS facilities is free for anyone on Brazilian soil, including tourists. Non-emergency continuity-of-care for non-residents varies by state and facility.
Go to any UPA (urgent care) or hospital público; bring passport. For scheduled care, register at a UBS (basic health unit).
Elective non-emergency care for tourists is not guaranteed. Have travel insurance for evacuation in life-threatening cases.
